     Each of the following items violates at least one basic guideline for writing news stories. The guidelines are:

Accuracy in detail and expression.
Attribution of all statements and information to reliable sources.
Verification of assertions, charges.
Balance and fairness.
Brevity.
Human interest in stories when possible.
News point stressed.

     Identify the errors. When possible, make corrections or indicate what should be done.


A. Shots

     A city plan, proposed by municipal health authorities today, would inoculate all unleashed animals and take them to the local pound where they would be given anti-rabies shots and returned to their owners after a $15 fine is paid. (Lead.)

B. Success

     Lee capped his successful 1975 season with the Red Sox by helping his teammates win the World Series against the Cincinnati Reds, Peralta said in his talk to the Boosters' Club. (Paragraph in story.)

C. Talk

     The local chapter of the Public Relations Society said today José Lopez García, director of an advertising agency in Mexico City, will address its meeting Oct. 20 at 8 p.m. in the Chamber of Commerce boardroom.
     Mr. García is on a tour of this country to gather ideas for the Mexican public relations industry. (Short item.)

D. Noise

     A special airport-sound study committee, set up at the local airfield, issued its report, Marshall Peat, airport manager, reported today.
     The study was set up to determine whether there would be any problems if the undeveloped land to the northeast of the field were developed for use as a housing project.
     The report stated that noise and the possibility of accidents make this area unfit for housing.
     "That should kill the housing proposal of Mitchell & Co.," Peat said. More than 250 acres are involved. Half the residents of the area said they intend to move if they can find housing. (Story.)

E. New Age

     "A new age of pot is dawning," said Albert Goldman in his talk to the Rotary Club this afternoon.
     Goldman, a writer, said marijuana will replace liquor and tobacco as the new middle-class social habit. Already, he said, it is used by almost all age and social groups. Because it has no known ill effects, Goldman said, it is safer than the habit-forming alcohol and cigarettes. (Story.)

F. Adoption

     Robert G. Dowle was named head of the Interfaith Children's Agency today at the annual meeting of the board.
     The agency arranges for the adoption of local youngsters through the various religious groups and the city social services department.
     Dowle said he was pleased by the appointment, particularly because he was placed in the home of his adoptive parents, Mr. and Mrs. Albert Dowle, in the first year of the agency's operation in 1937. (Story.)

G. Tour

     During his travels, he dropped off in Iceland, the world's largest island. He toured the interior, which is covered with an enormous sheet of ice. He said the island was discovered by Eric the Red almost 1,000 years ago. (Part of story.)
