Online Pharmacies

Narrator: The Internet is becoming a popular alternative to the corner pharmacy. This year about 100 million dollars worth of prescription drugs will be bought online. That's just a sliver of the market but that figure is expected to swell to nearly 4 1/2 billion dollars by the year 2004. Sales of penicillin and other antibiotics are not leading the way online, instead it's lifestyle drugs such as Propecia and Viagra that are best sellers.

Woman: You can actually get the drug cheaper online in many cases. Because the prices are competitive, and you also have the added benefit of it being a more of a private transaction.

Narrator: Privacy, convenience, competitive pricing, all selling points of the Internet. Potential drawbacks include safety, reliability, and accountability.

Man: The sites that are willing to give you drugs without prescriptions or any sort of verification. Again you really have to be worried how reputable those sites are and again especially those sites have been more known for giving improper doses or the wrong drugs that they're sending out.

Narrator: To protect yourself the FDA recommends you look for contact information, avoid sites that advertise a new cure, and don't buy from a site that doesn't require a prescription.
