DATABASES AND DBMS SOFTWARE

Databases are an important part of an Information Economy. We devoted an entire chapter to discussing database use in business and on the Web. We spent a great deal of time showing you how to use a DBMS and discussed the issues surrounding database use, such as information security and privacy.

Remember that a database stores and organizes data. You access a database using a database management system (DBMS). A DBMS is application software that allows you to arrange, modify, and extract data from a database to create information.

In Chapter 8 we provided you with a short list of database and DBMS software packages. Here, we revisit the list, as well as add a few more software applications. We have also provided some links to database and DBMS tutorials:
