PRIVACY ORGANIZATIONS Privacy
is the right to be left alone when you want to be, to have
control over your own personal information, and not to be
observed without your consent. It's the right to be free
of unwanted intrusion into your private life. Ultimately, it's up to you to protect your personal
data. If you don't want someone to know what you bought,
use cash instead of a credit card. If you don't want
someone to know your address, get a post office box. To stop
unwanted e-mail, use a separate e-mail account for the surveys
you fill out online. Here are some organizations that exist to monitor the use of
personal information and to help us protect it. Consumers Against Supermarket Privacy Invasion and
Numbering (CASPIAN) CASPIAN is a Web-based organization that is opposed to supermarkets' requiring customers to provide personal information in exchange for discounts. Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) EPIC is a well-known watch-dog organization that speaks out on all aspects of personal privacy from medical records privacy to telecommunications laws. EPIC conducts seminars and litigation, sponsors conferences, produces reports and otherwise works diligently to keep the public informed of encroachments on their privacy. American Civil Liberties Union Freedom Network:
Privacy The ACLU was originally founded in 1920, but since the dawn of the information age has turned it attention to privacy issues. The organization has also initiated litigation to protect personal privacy. Consumer Project on Technology (CPT) The CPT was started by Ralph Nader in 1995 to consider telecommunications regulation, the pricing of telecommunications services, copyright issues and the effect of technology on personal privacy. Bumper Resource Sites It's very easy to find sites on the Web that list privacy resources. Below is a sampling of bumper sites. |
