Section 2: Prenatal Development: From Conception to Birth

4. Children raised with more influence from fathers may have the opportunity to be exposed to different parent methods, they may also have fathers who have the same style and support and reinforce mother's childrearing styles. This trend's effect on attachment could mean that the child will develop a closer attachment to more than one person and this would appear to be an advantage to a child. Children who can learn from the modeling of both mothers and fathers have the advantage of experiencing the qualities that society has always seen as strongly male or strongly female. For example, with fathers play is different, more physical. Mothers are more verbal. Having more experiences and more choices and role models as they develop should have a positive effect on the development of children.

Section 4: Adolescence: Becoming an Adult

7. Schools traditionally have a great deal of bullying and teasing that goes on with the kids that are different, maturing early or late would make one different. Gym classes where students have to dress and shower in groups, gym classes where students have to compete, schools that place great emphasis on sports, and schools that perpetuate the "think thin" mentality can all have the potential to hurt teen development. Same sex schools would assume that the problems come because of the new male-female relationships. Many times the competitiveness is strongest in same sex groups.

8. Rights of passage are beneficial because they allow us to be publicly acknowledged for different stages in maturity. It helps adolescents to both expect and accept certain responsibilities that go with the age. In the United States getting a driver's license, graduating from high school, moving out of parents' homes, and the right to vote are a few rites of passage. In the United States turning 18 years of age does give a person adult status and holds them legally responsible for their actions.
