(See related pages)

Last night there was an armed robbery of a drugstore at 450 Stanley St., Freeport. Two men wearing ski masks entered the store, and while one held a gun on the owner, Barney G. Joseph, 43, 1625 Tennessee Ave., the other removed $382.65 from the cash register. Time, about 8:30 p.m. The men left in a car that was parked with its motor running at the curb in front of the store.

One of the desk sergeants says Joseph kept a pistol under the counter near the register but decided not to use it. He told the police it was over in less than a minute. He could have reached for the gun, he told the police, but he felt it unwise.

Back at the office in clips under Joseph's name: His father was killed in a holdup at the same store 25 years ago. Call Joseph to ask if he remembered that incident during the holdup: "Yes. Dad resisted, I guess. Anyway, they found him shot to death, his own gun in his hand, and a bullet in the store ceiling. I'd rather part with my money than my life."
