Write a short feature from the following material:

John Baily, 7, and Porter Smyth, took a hike with John's six-month-old puppy, Peppie, along the Tallapoosa River near Tallassee, Ala., last night. Smyth, 19, got stuck in quicksand and could not extricate himself.

John tied a rope to a tree, put it under Smyth's arms and set out for Tallassee for help. They had hiked 10 miles from home, and John had difficulty finding his way in the growing darkness. He said Peppie guided him home, which they reached at 7 p.m.

Smyth's father, Raynold Smyth, Peppie and John went out to try to find Porter Smyth, and two hours later, led by Peppie, they found him. The mud was up to Porter's shoulders and it took 20 minutes to dig the young man out.

"Without Peppie," said Raynold, "we never would have found my son. That dog is a hero, first class."
