Overwriting: Often the result of trying too hard for effect. Sometimes the result of inadequate reporting.
Overreporting: One good anecdote or quote that proves or illustrates each point is enough.
Concern for the subject: Be fair and give an accurate, complete and balanced account, but do not be too concerned with what the subject will think of the piece.
Bogging down in background: Look for the highlights of the career, the situation. A year-to-year or day-to-day account fogs the point, bores the reader.
Lack of guts: If everyone says your subject is a tightwad but still a charming guy, say so. Give the full profile, blemishes and beauty marks.
