Syracuse   Here is a handout from a sports publicity office. List all the clichés and trite expressions. Rewrite.   SYRACUSE, N.Y.—Syracuse University has 10 sophomore newcomers who may play more than a little football, but four of the young men could climb well up the ladder of success by December.   The athletes in question are halfback Ernie Davis, and Ken Ericson, center Bob Stem and quarterback Dave Sarette. The authority is Orange head coach Floyd (Ben) Schwartzwalder.   Top man among the rookie group is Ernie Davis, the fleet 6-2, 205-pound speedster from Elmira, N.Y., who was a world-beater with the SU frosh last fall and an All-American in high school. As the expression goes, Davis has all the tools.   "Ernie is our top prospect, no question about that," offers Schwartzwalder. "He'll be in our starting lineup against Kansas this Saturday and he's going to become a great football player. I'd like to have about 10 more like Ernie."   Ericson, a 6-2, 190-pound end from Weymouth, Mass., became an even more important factor in Schwartzwalder's plans last week when knee injuries sidelined starting left end Dave Baker and slowed up reserve flanker Tom Gilburg. Ericson got a chance to scrimmage with the Syracuse starting team, due to the mishaps, and was very impressive. He is regarded as an outstanding pass receiver.   Stem, a fire-plug 5–11, 195-pound pivot from Phillipsburg, N.J., has improved by leaps and bounds and is pressing veterans Dave Applehof and Al Bemiller at center. Bob has drawn raves for his line-backing. |
