Sentence Structure

Definition: The regular order for an English sentence is subject/verb/object, as She/sent/a letter. Indirect objects can follow the verb or be replaced with aprepositional phrase that follows the direct object: "She sent a letter to her new roommate" or "She sent her new roommate a letter."

  1. Understood subjects: In some languages the subject of a sentence may be omitted if the writer judges that readers will know it. In written English, the subject may be omitted only in second-person constructions, in which the second-person pronoun you may be omitted as an understood subject. "You go get the car" is second-person construction. "Go get the car" is a construction with an understood subject.
  2. "It" and "There" structures: Sentences can begin with "it" and "there" and a "be" verb if the subject has been moved to another position in the sentence.
  3. Direct and indirect quotations and questions: When you want to include a direct quotation (either in few words, a sentence, or a question), you must place the exact words in quotation marks. When you use an indirect quotation or question, which summarizes or paraphrases the speaker's words, you do not use quotation marks.
