What’s this Chapter Mainly About? (the short version)

This chapter represents a huge leap from the previous one in terms of the amount of material presented. In short, there’s a lot more stuff, but it needn’t be confusing or overwhelming (take a deep breath and let’s do this together).

The key to this chapter is remembering that it’s essentially a blown up version of certain parts of the MARS Model. Look at exhibit 2.1 carefully (very carefully). The whole thing provides a general blueprint for all the chapters up to number six. Of course definitions are provided for motivation, ability, role perceptions, and situational factors. After that, chapter two deals with individual behaviour at work, personality, values and ethics. Notice that most of those are contained in the dark green box in the MARS model. As for the other parts of the model, they will be dealt with in subsequent chapters: Perceptions (Chapter 3); emotions, attitudes and stress (Chapter 4); motivation (Chapters 5 and 6). With so many future chapters (including this one) derived from stuff on the MARS model, I’m sure you can appreciate how important it is.

Another important part of the chapter deals with the five types of work behaviour in organizations. Of course, you may be thinking there are so many – and you’d be right! What if you had to group them into just five categories? That would make it easier wouldn’t it? Well, that’s exactly what this section does. More importantly, it also discusses some of the consequences of those behaviours.

The rest of the chapter is dedicated to listing, defining and understanding various values and personality traits. This is the part of the chapter that gives students the impression it’s filled with a series of laundry lists. It isn’t really, but it sure seems that way. How many kinds of values and personality dimensions exist, and how many models are there to explain them? Sort out the laundry list – whites, colours, permanent press, and dry clean only.

The last part of the chapter may be easier for you to deal with. Who knew there were three ethical principles, and that sometimes they are at odds? You can bet you’ll see at least one question about this on your exam (so be prepared).
