The fertile farmlands of the Midwest attracted German immigrants 150 years ago, and today they are still a magnet to those who see the United States as a land of opportunity. The latest flow is from Mexico and the countries to the south. To see how these newcomers were faring, the Evansville Courier & Press sent Denny Simmons to photograph the Hispanic families at work, worship and play.

Around Owensboro, Ky., Mexican men harvest vegetables and haul tobacco leaves. They work at jobs that allow them to send money home to wives and children.

Some of the families put down roots. They rent apartments, and some buy homes. They shop at the local supermarkets, and the children, like Mirabel Calderon, attend local schools.
