Grammar Exercises 1

Articles and Nouns

Definition: The words "a," "an," and "the" are called articles. "A" and "an" are indefinite articles, and "the" is the definite article. They are used to modify nouns. First you need to decide whether you are looking at a general noun or a specific noun. General nouns name an entire category or a representative member of a category. Specific nouns refer not to a general category but to one particular thing (or group of things) known to the reader:

  1. If general and uncountable, do not add an article.
  2. If general, countable, and plural, do not add an article.
  3. If general, countable, and singular, use "a" or "an."
  4. If specific, use "the."

Directions: Correct the article errors in the following sentences. From the lettered choices following each numbered exercise, identify the revision that correctly edits the sentence.
