Comma Errors

Definition: A comma is incorrect in each of these ten situations:

  1. Between a verb and its subject or object.
  2. After a coordinating conjunction.
  3. Before and after essential (restrictive) elements.
  4. Before the first or after the last item in a series.
  5. Between two compound elements.
  6. Between cumulative adjectives and adverbs.
  7. Between an adjective and a noun or between an adverb and an adjective.
  8. After such as or like or before than.
  9. Before an indirect quotation.
  10. With question marks, exclamation points, parentheses, and dashes.

Directions: From the lettered choices following each numbered exercise, identify the revision that correctly removes unnecessary commas. Some sentences may already be correct.
